Pot Selection
- Size: Start with 25â30 cm diameter. Repot every 2â3 years, increasing by 5 cm
- Material: Terracotta (breathable, heavy), plastic (lightweight, retains moisture), or glazed ceramic (decorative)
- Drainage: Essential â minimum 2â3 drainage holes. Add 3â5 cm of gravel at the bottom
- Self-watering pots: Excellent for jasmine â maintains consistent moisture
Potting Mix
Use a well-draining mix: 40% peat moss or coco coir + 30% perlite + 20% compost + 10% orchid bark. pH 6.0â7.0. Add slow-release fertilizer pellets at planting.
Indoor Growing Tips
Light Requirements
Place in a south-facing window with 6+ hours direct sunlight. If light is insufficient, supplement with a grow light (full spectrum, 12â14 hours/day). Rotate the pot weekly for even growth.
Temperature & Humidity
- Daytime: 20â27°C (68â80°F). Night: 15â18°C (59â65°F)
- Avoid placing near heating/AC vents or cold drafts
- Humidity: 50â60%. Use a pebble tray with water or a humidifier
- In winter, move to a cooler room (10â15°C) for dormancy and better spring blooming
Watering Indoor Jasmine
Water when the top 2 cm of soil feels dry. Typically once a week in summer, every 10â14 days in winter. Use room-temperature water. Ensure excess water drains completely â never let pots sit in saucers of water.
Outdoor Container Growing
Container-grown jasmine thrives on balconies, patios, and terraces in warm climates.
Summer Care
- Water daily in hot weather (containers dry out faster than ground)
- Move to partial shade if temperatures exceed 35°C
- Feed every 2 weeks with liquid fertilizer (10-10-10) diluted to half strength
- Mist leaves in the evening for humidity
Winter Care (Cold Climates)
- Bring indoors before first frost (when night temps drop below 10°C)
- Place in the coolest room with bright light
- Reduce watering â let soil dry slightly between waterings
- Resume normal care in spring after last frost
Trellis & Support
Climbing species (J. officinale, J. polyanthum) need support in containers.
Trellis
Classic support. Choose decorative metal or bamboo. Minimum 60 cm tall.
Plant Hoop
Circular support that fits inside the pot. Clean, modern look.
Obelisk
Freestanding tower. Creates a stunning vertical display.
