Comprehensive terminology for jasmine botany, farming, and perfumery

A

TermDefinition
AbsoluteHighly concentrated aromatic extract obtained by solvent extraction. The most valuable form of jasmine aroma used in perfumery.
AllelopathyThe chemical inhibition of one plant by another through the release of substances (e.g., juglone from black walnut).
AntherThe part of the stamen that produces pollen. In jasmine, typically two per flower.
Apical dominanceThe tendency of the main central stem to grow more strongly than side stems. Pruning removes this to encourage bushiness.

Basal applicationApplying fertilizer at the base of the plant before the growing season begins.
BenzenoidA class of aromatic compounds derived from benzene. Major components of jasmine fragrance (e.g., benzyl acetate).
BrixA measure of sugar content in plant sap. Used to assess flower quality in some regions.

C

CalyxThe outer whorl of a flower, consisting of sepals. In jasmine, the green tubular structure at the base of the flower.
ConcreteThe waxy product obtained after solvent extraction of flowers, before ethanol washing to produce absolute.
CorollaThe collective term for all petals of a flower. In jasmine, typically 5–12 fused petals forming a tube.
CultivarA cultivated variety of a plant, maintained by vegetative propagation. Abbreviation of "cultivated variety."
CuttingsSections of stem used to propagate new plants. The most common method for jasmine multiplication.

DioeciousHaving male and female reproductive organs on separate plants.
EnfleurageTraditional extraction method using fat to absorb flower fragrances. Originated in Grasse, France.
FertigationApplication of fertilizers dissolved in irrigation water, typically through drip systems.
FloruitThe period during which a plant is in flower.

G–J

GrandiflorumLatin for "large-flowered." Refers to J. grandiflorum, the Royal Jasmine used in perfumery.
IBAIndole-3-butyric acid — a plant hormone used to stimulate root development in cuttings.
IndoleA volatile compound found in jasmine. Floral in low concentrations, fecal in high concentrations. Key perfumery ingredient.
JasmoneA key aromatic compound in jasmine oil responsible for its characteristic warm, floral scent.

L–P

LinaloolA terpene alcohol with a fresh, floral scent. Major component of jasmine oil (15–22%).
MonoterpeneA class of aromatic compounds with 10 carbon atoms. Found in essential oils including jasmine.
NPKNitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), Potassium (K) — the three primary macronutrients for plant growth.
OleaceaeThe olive family. Jasmine belongs to this family along with olives, lilacs, and forsythias.
PistilThe female reproductive organ of a flower, consisting of stigma, style, and ovary.

SambacRefers to J. sambac (Arabian Jasmine). The most commercially important jasmine species.
Semi-hardwoodStem wood that is partially mature — firm but still slightly flexible. Ideal for cuttings.
StamenThe male reproductive organ of a flower, consisting of filament and anther.
VOCVolatile Organic Compound — chemicals released by plants that create fragrance. Jasmine produces 100+ VOCs.
