Home Steam Distillation
Equipment Needed
- Large pot with lid (stainless steel, 20L)
- Steam basket or rack (to hold flowers above water)
- Copper or glass coil (condenser)
- Collection vessel (glass jar)
- Ice (for cooling condenser)
Process
- Fill pot with 5L water. Place rack 10 cm above water level.
- Spread fresh flowers (500g) on the rack. Do not pack tightly.
- Bring water to a gentle simmer (not boiling — 85–95°C).
- Steam passes through flowers, carrying volatile compounds.
- Steam exits through the coil, condenses back to liquid.
- Oil floats on top of the hydrosol in the collection vessel.
- Carefully separate the oil layer with a pipette.
Yield: 0.05–0.1% of flower weight. You'll need ~1 kg flowers for 0.5–1 ml of oil.
